I just gotta get this off my chest. This kind of think gets me a bit upset, and I will explain why.
I was doing my normal youtube "look for stuff" thing that I do. And I found a video in which this woman was almost crying she was so happy. She was talking about this site that she said "just made me feel so good, its incredible." So. I do what the links say, and "Tada!", it really was a very cool site, with a very awesome message.
I dove in head first to this "FREE" site. I watched the video. I even did 1 lesson. Thought to myself "HEY! This place really is cool!" and it is. Just one major problem (though, I should have known better). You cant do anymore than the first lesson unless you pay a $200 a year fee to "upgrade." You can still talk to people, but, from what the video says, you need to take this lesson to know yourself to know your universe.
A fee to upgrade your free membership to one that allows you to do what the site said everyone was welcome to do/join. A site that tells everyone "we want the world to be a better place." Ok. I get it. People need money. Why THAT much a year? I can just do what I always do, and self heal myself with newsvine, and many other places that dont charge for membership.
I can just try to make my corner of the world better from here. Without spending 200 smackers. To take a test and write some answers.
"We want everyone to reach their full potential." But only if you pay $200. Please feel free to "explore" this site and find some people to talk to! Just cant do the really cool stuff unless you pay us. OH! And on our video, we talk about a boy on here who does wonders! But, he paid $200 for his membership, so he could figure out that GMO's are bad, and organic is good.
This boy is doing wonders! He really is. But, a 10 year old paid $200 for a membership to a "help the world" site. What is wrong with this picture?
"Social Networking is the best way to make changes. It allows the world to see the good."
Ok. Just dont forget that it also cost $200 to make a difference in the world, by their own words.
"You cant help the world unless you know your universe."
And you wont ever understand your universe unless you give us $200.
Nice. Can you believe this?
I was so excited for this place. I really thought these people wanted to do good in the world. Why charge a HUGE amount of money for a membership each year? So you can "realize your inner potential"? Why cant they just do what other people do, ask for a donation? At least make the membership somewhere in the "affordable" realm?
Point is- I dont need to pay $200 for a membership to a site so I can figure out my universe, so that LATER I can do actual good. Apparently I know my universe well enough to understand that in this universe, people are broke. People are barely scraping by in an economy that isnt expected to last 5 more years. Who has an extra $200 to go out and change the world (from your living room)?
Yeah right.
Im sure that there are awesome people and ideas on there. I am positive that it was started with the best of intentions. I have no doubt in my mind that the people who are members are trying to do something positive, and they might even have needed that little test in order to let them see that they have a huge value in life. I get it.
What I dont get is how some rich guys (Virgin Mobil guy) can say that it feels good to help out, to start this site, and then turn around and make a lesson plan that costs money, on a site that says it would be easier and better to help people if it is easier to access the abilities, tools, and minds of others, for FREE!? What is wrong with this.
Basically its like facebook. You can give and get "love points" for doing good and having good ideas. Thats the free part, just exchanging ideas. Good idea, really.
Then, you realize the "free book" you get to read is really well thought out, but just says the same thing over and over again, brainwashing you into doing the class.
So you do the first lesson. Look deep inside yourself. A lot like therapy for drug and alcohol classes.
Second lesson:
Upgrade your membership to continue!
Nope. Not this girl. I almost did though, until I saw that it cost over $175 for a year. I kind of laughed and shook my head. Go figure.
So- Heres my "help the world" part of the day-
I am just going to keep doing what I do for now. Right here in my little spot. And also around "MY Universe", which happens to be in little ole Wyoming, but people here are very gracious and giving, and it seems to be a great place to do it from. I am going to keep up my part of my want to help the world, and it isnt going to cost money to a club to figure out who I am. I'll go read an addiction book to get basically the same thing if I need it, though I am sure I dont. I am pretty sure I know who I am, why I think the way I do, and what I want to see happen in the world. I am pretty sure I know that I want to do good, and I dont want to waste my time with a membership to a "club" that costs a ton. I have a free membership to one of the best "clubs" on Earth, and it sometimes even GIVES me MONEY to DONATE to a GOOD CAUSE.
I do know that now I want to start a REAL "FREE" site, and make it a place for GOOD ideas, and maybe even have a list of LINKS to organizations that are reputable to DONATE TO. I dont need anyones money to tell people to "know their universe." I'll tell ya right now- whether you know your universe or not, there are people out there that need help. There are things that need change. There are many issues that can be worked through if money were not so desired an object.
What is wrong with FREE good idea exchange? What is wrong with FREE self help? Especially when you see the Mega Rich on a video telling you they want to help you help the world. Im sure they dont need our money to do that. Anyone can tell you that self help is YOU helping YOURSELF. Thats why the books only cost $20.
I dont know, Newsvine. I guess it must cost a ton to make the Mega Rich get out of bed and do the right thing...
